An account is optional

You can browse everything in JJAY Campus Companion — classes, events, campus facilities, and professor reviews — without signing up. Anonymous browsing sends us nothing that identifies you.

Signing up requires a CUNY email

Creating an account requires an email address at one of these domains: @login.cuny.edu, @jjay.cuny.edu, or @stu-mail.jjay.cuny.edu. This keeps accounts limited to the CUNY community.

What we store

If you create an account, we store:

• Your email address.
• The professor reviews and tags you post.
• Your account preferences.

And, if you join chat:

• The display name you choose, and the date you accepted the chat rules.
• The messages, replies, reactions and GIFs you post.
• Any reports you file, and reports other people file about your messages — a report keeps a copy of the reported message so it can still be reviewed after the original is deleted.
• Who you have blocked, and any moderation record on your account (strikes, mutes).

That data lives in Supabase, the backend service the app is built on.

Chat

Chat is optional and separate from the rest of the app — you have to accept the chat rules and pick a display name before you can post. Your display name is shown on every message you send, alongside the channel’s other members. Your email address is never shown to other users.

Messages are screened automatically before they post, and you can report a message or block another user from inside the app. Reported messages are reviewed by a person. A serious or repeated violation can mute your account temporarily.

Who else sees your data

We don’t sell or share your data. Three services process parts of it so the app can work:

• Supabase — hosts the database and accounts. Everything described above is stored there.
• OpenAI — screens message text and display names for harassment, hate speech and threats before they post. Only the text is sent. Your email, your account id and your display name are not attached to it.
• KLIPY — powers GIF search, and only when you open the GIF picker. KLIPY receives what you type into GIF search, your device’s IP address, and a random id created on your device for that purpose. That id is deliberately not your account id, so your GIF searches are not linked to your account or your email.

Where the app’s data comes from

• Professor statistics come from RateMyProfessors.
• Events and calendar data are gathered from public pages on jjay.cuny.edu.

What we don’t do

• No ads.
• No selling or sharing your data.
• No tracking SDKs, no analytics, no cookies.

Deleting your account

Use Delete account in the app (in the Profile tab). It removes your account and everything tied to it — your email, your display name, your reviews and tags, your chat messages and reactions, your blocks, your moderation record, and any reports you filed or that were filed about your messages. Nothing is kept behind after deletion.
